Hello,
I was so happy to see that something like this has come up in Gainesville. I have been studying permaculture and other forms of sustainable agriculture in New Zealand for the past year, and am greatly wanting to design a food forest eventually on the 8 acres I have to play with. I still have much to learn, particularly on the Melrose ecosystem, but was wondering if and when I can be of service to help, and learn at this place. I will not be fully available until the New Year, and will be trying to go to the Philippines as soon as possible to work on a forest garden there, but am greatly inspired to see what it is going on at this place. Thank for starting it up, and please send any pertinent info about work/volunteering.

I have recently purchased an acre and a half, and the goal is to cover with all kind of fruit and nut trees. My question is this: I have a huge orange tree that is supposedly sour. Is there any way to make it not sour? I hate to waste thousands of oranges. I heard putting lime around the base, is this correct? Any help?

You make me excited with this great information! I always thought India was best known for the Engineers and Gurus. LOL. Anyhow, living in Florida is great. We pretty much eat a starch, fruit and vegetable based selection of food. I use lentils and nuts and seeds sparingly. Greens and starches go well together. I will find a source for the trees and do the grow thing. Thanks very much. Art

This is my new favorite vegetable. I steam it with rice (last 7 minutes) and eat it with the rice- delicious. It grows great here in South Florida and is attractive.

I cant wait to visit, we are just building a small retail nursery & would like to highlight more edible landscaping choices. We are committed to providing quality plants at wholesale or below pricing to the public. Since we are located near the villages & spruce creek we are hoping to reach a broad audience. I think you could become a very important source for us keep up the GREAT work. thanks wc

Tom, it would be hard to confuse sochan with poison hemlock. the leaves and growth patterns are quite different.

Sochan is a tasty, nutritious green that is easy to grow and comes back year after year.
